Fraser river Chinook or King salmon

Silversides provides guided Fraser River fishing trips for Chinook or King Salmon. Fraser river Chinook salmon, also known as King salmon or Spring salmon are the premier sportfish of all the 5 salmon species in BC. By far they are the strongest of all the salmon, mostly due to their size but they are genetically built for endurance as they often have to travel hundreds of miles up the Fraser river and all of it's fast strong currents.

Chinook salmon in the Fraser river have reached weights of 100 lbs but any fish over 80 lbs is quite rare. More commonly Chinooks average around 25 lbs with many fish around 35 lbs. Many lucky anglers have landed fish over 50 and 60 in recent years!

King salmon migrate up the Fraser river most of the year but July to October is peak times. Runs typically start in March as some early fish head into the upper Harrison system- Lillooet and Birkenhead rivers to name a few. The numbers are not strong and typically we don't fish for them in March - April on the Fraser river but their are opportunities further upstream. As the Fraser goes into freshet by mid May early summer runs of Chinook (Springs) head upriver. The Fraser river crests in mid June and then the mid summer fish start heading upriver to their native streams. So by late June we start to see good numbers of fish. Chinooks will continue to head up river throughout the summer months and by late August the numbers sharply rise for about 2 weeks. The Fraser is in good shape at this time with good visibility so fish are quite aggressive. Fall fishing for large Harrison river Kings is good from mid September to mid October. These fish head up the Fraser river before entering the Harrison near Chilliwack, BC and are very good biters and wicked fighters. These are the 'White' Kings and although their reputation for eating is not the same as a red King, their scrapping ability is superior. Harrison river Chinooks are larger and average 30 lbs with many fish over 50 and 60 lbs taken!

Many Fraser river valley tributaries offer good Chinook salmon fishing from July to October. The Chilliwack river is one of them. There are 2 runs for this river- July for 'red' Chinooks and September October for the 'whites'.
